Oil Painting Restoration

Work in Progress. This fine mid nineteenth century oil painting of a three mast barquentine ship was covered in a brown film of tobacco and accumulated dirt. Cleaning with cotton buds revealed the delicate colours of the clouds in the sky. Unfortunately the painting had been glued onto hardboard, and it's removal from this substrate would have been very difficult. A number of missing paint areas were restored, and a previous restoration attempt was reversed

The original frame was in poor condition, with a split along one long side, and missing ornamentation, and also flaking paint on the edges.

The split frame was repaired, and the damaged floral ornamentation replaced with a gesso mix and repainted. The edge of the frame was sanded down to the wood, and then repainted with a shellac old gold mixture to match the face of the frame
