Football shirts require a box frame which allows sufficent space between the shirt and glass so
they do not touch. Shirts should not be folded too small, or crushed between the glass and backing board. We like to retain
the shirt in its actual size, however sometimes we fold the bottom quarter to reduce the overall frame size.
Please be aware that a large framed shirt will be about 34"x38"/ 86x97cm, and quite heavy!
The box frame is lined with a contrasting colour to the shirt. A foamboard insert is cut to the shape of the
shirt to provide the necessary padding. Sleeves are usually pinned inwards to reduce the overall width. Shirts are held
in position by nylon line sown into the box lining at strategic points. The glass is sealed to the box
frame with conservation paper tape that keeps out any dust particles. This sealed
package is then fitted into the frame in such a manner that it may easily be removed at a later date if required.
Float glass reflects about eight per cent of light which can be a problem under certain conditions, however we can offer a
low relection glass that reflects less than one per cent of light, and when viewed at the optimium
viewing angle, directly opposite the framed image, the glass tends to disappear, however this depends on ambient lighting
conditions.
SIGNATURES ON SIGNED SHIRTS ARE PARTICULARY VULNERABLE TO FADING UNDER STRONG LIGHTING CONDITIONS.
Even the fabric colour will gradually fade if the framed shirt is placed opposite a window. If strong lighting conditions cannot be
avoided, UV filtered glass should be used to protect the fabric colours.
High humidity can cause mold growth and should also be avoided.
Prices for shirts start from £160.00.
Low Reflection Glass
Approximately only 92% of light is transmitted through glass, the rest is reflected towards the viewer. Low reflection glass
transmitts over 99% of light, giving a brighter, clearer image, with minimal reflection. Most types of Low-Reflection glass
are coated with a multi-layer optical interference coating (OIC) which is very similar to the lens on cameras and binocolars.
Coated glass must be handled and cleaned with care, as the coating can be vulnerable to scratching.
Conservation Tape
We use this conservation tape to seal the glass/mount/foamboard package to prevent the intrusion of dust and insects.
The tape is an acid free, water based, non-ageing, non-yellowing with a elastic acrylate adhesive.
UV Filtered Glass
We use Tru Vue Conservation Clear 2.5mm Glass which has a filter on the side facing the Artwork. This
absorbs 98% of the damaging UV energy that exists just beyond the violet end of the visiable spectrum. It is important to realize
that UV Glass does not offer complete protection, and Football Shirts should still be shielded from direct and excessive sunlight.
UV is defined as energy within the 300-400 nanometer range. Ultraviolet (UV) light transmits energy into the atoms of the object
it strikes. This energy excites the atoms and transforms them into new substances, which manifests in Football Shirts as fading
of signatures and colour dyes, and general degradation of the fabric. Also the colour of the box frame will fade under strong
lighting conditions.
