Medals require a box frame to allow sufficent space between the medals and the glass. The box is normally lined by a suedette mountboard that provides a rich colour/texture contrast to the ribbons and medals. It is often a good idea to include a small photo of the recipient, and perhaps other related information. Ribbons are sown to the suedette background with thin almost invisible nylon thread. The glass is then sealed to the box with a conservation paper tape which prevents the intrusion of dust and insects. This sealed unit is then inserted into the frame in such a manner that it may be easily removed at a later date.
Often overlooked is the fact that Ribbons like other fabrics will gradually fade if constantly
subjected to sunlight or strong artifical light. We recommend not to hang medals opposite windows, or under
fluorescent/spot lighting. If strong lighting conditions cannot be avoided, a UV Filtered Glass should be used to protect the ribbons and background
colours from fading.
Medals that have been cleaned and polished will gradually lose their shine. This is a natural process and depends on the
type of alloy composition and the ambient humidity. Bronze stars, for instance will return to their natural patina quickly
whereas medals with bright alloys will retain their shine.
Prices for framing Medal Sets start at £80.00 for a single row of medals on a clasp, but prices vary depending on the amount of medals and other items included.
Conservation Paper Tape
We use this conservation tape to seal the glass/mount/foamboard package
to prevent the intrusion of dust and insects. The tape is an acid free, water based, non-ageing, non-yellowing with
a elastic acrylate adhesive.
UV Filtered Glass
Helps prevent damaging UV light fading and degrading delicate papers and fabrics. The inside of the glass facing
the artwork is coated with the UV filter. It is important to remember that UV Filtering will only slow the deterioration of artwork on
paper, this is because no filter can block 100% UV energy and there are other factors which cause paper and fabrics to degrade
such as the chemical nature of the paper, inks and pigments.
